lately i’m having the urge to print something big. i’ve added ultimaker2+ extended printer this year my next costume printing and other large-scale objects. i needed to test print something with max height for this machine. i threw in a plastic bunny model i scanned as a test.
originally i wanted to print a life size chocolate bunny head i could wear. I cleaned up the 3d scan data and split them into pieces and added openings for strong magnets so i could wear it by napping pieces together (like MarkV inIronMan). well… i realized each pieces requires longer printing time and more materials and its a bit too expensive for a non-Halloween costume I was thinking. so i decided to print something to check maximum height for this printer.
i used the function Scale->To Max in Cura and it sets the max printable volume for selected machine types. Cura indicates that the model is now 312mm high and higher than what the machine spec says (302mm). hmm…. with my ? in my mind i pressed start. 0.8mm nozzle with shell thickness 1.6mm w/o infill (so 2 passes on same level to make a single 1.6mm think wall). also when you have already a large base surface and need just a few lines of Brim instead of default 10, you can change it by Expert > Open expert settings… > Expert config window – Brim line amount. in progress printing did look like printing a white chocolate bunny…
9 hrs and 10m PLA later, I got a very satisfying print of plastic white bunny.
