honeycomb sphere sim

honeycomb sphere is a paper ornament i liked since i was little. it was so magic to me that just a flat stacked papers turn into large 3D object. it turned out not so hard to DIYI so i decided to do this is Marvelous Designer after I saw many of those at weddings and baby showers.

 

the construction steps (seams & stacking meshes tightly) can be done proceduerally like smocking techniques since it’s all about repeated patterns and constrain rules to make this object. i made stitches just once and duplicated them by hand so it was a quick preparation. simulation parameter was little tricky due to detecting neighboring cloth in tight space. the spring force from the stitching caused meshes to jam so i gave a higher sampling rate to slow down the sim.
