i didn’t know that this particular smocking technique is called “canadian smocking“till recently. i use MD to doodle my sewing patterns and i found plotting the smocking patterns soothing. by running simulation in MD I can see the result quickly.
also what i learned from smocking is that the order of gathering and the direction of cinching make the difference in final shapes even when the plotted designs are very similar or exact the same. i used combination of MD’s Internal Line with “elastic On” and Basting/Tack tools to mimc hand pleating. this is an old fabric manipulation art and different cultures have their own techniques. fascinating and simply beautiful.
