Inspired by The Adventures of André and Wally B (Pixar short film 1984)

The characters are from the computer graphics short film from 1984. I love the simplicity of character design within a limitation of technology that time. Com’n it’s almost 30 years ago and getting a spheres and tear drop shapes deformed were very difficult things to do.

The pattern was simple to make but I also wanted both of them to be cute as a plush, so I spent more time on design than pattern revisions. Wally B was pretty much free-hand. I didn’t want to make the process so complicated that I lose the simplicity of the character silhouette. On the other hand, I used Pepakura software on André since all I wanted was how I could simplify the pattern while retaining the shape and proportions in the leaned back pose. I use Pepakura a lot to figure out different ways to cut primitives and still keep shapes. It’s like figuring out the 3D puzzle and I personally enjoy the game.
